Cataracts
Cataracts is a clouding of the lens, making images appear fuzzy or blurred. Depending on the severity, the doctor may recommend monitoring or a referral for an artificial lens replacement procedure.
Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic Retinopathy is the most common diabetic disease in the eye. It occurs when the blood vessels in the retina (the back of the eye) swell, leak fluid, or close off completely. In the early stages of diabetic retinopathy, people often do not notice disruption in their vision. As it progresses, however, diabetic retinopathy usually causes loss of vision that often cannot be reversible. It is recommended for diabetics to get their eye health checked yearly, as early detection is critical.
Dry Eyes Syndrome
Dry Eye Syndrome is an irritation of the ocular surface, typically caused by poor lubrication. Treatment plans may vary depending on the severity. Artificial tears, fish oil, flaxseed oil, and/or prescription therapy may be recommended to increase tear production
Glaucoma
An increase in Intraocular Pressure (IOP) or poor circulation to the nerve fibers can cause damage to the optic nerve, resulting in glaucoma. Early detection is the key to preventing peripheral vision loss and blindness caused by glaucoma. Treatments for glaucoma include eye drops, laser surgery, and/or traditional surgery.
Keratoconus
Keratoconus, a progressive eye disease, is a condition in which the cornea thins and bulges into a cone-like shape, distorting vision. Depending on the severity, treatment options includes specialty contact lenses, Intacs (corneal inserts to help reshape the cornea), Corneal Crosslinking, which involves riboflavin drops into the eye to strengthen corneal tissues, and cornea transplants.
Macular Degeneration
The macula is a small area in the back of the eye that allows you to see fine details. When the macula breaks down, there is a loss of sharp central vision. Treatment varies depending on the severity, from eye vitamins and monitoring, to laser surgery, photodynamic therapy, drug therapies, and traditional surgery.
